How to Build a Medical Team?
The key to building a medical team is trust. You need to feel that your team has a coach, manager, and cheerleaders who will guide and support you with the common goal to achieve success. Your team should also be available when there are obstacles along the way. They should identify when you might need more support too.
It is not easy to find the right fit without second guessing yourself. Everyone on the internet is “the best”. You can ask family and friends for recommendations even if they have not experienced your illness. Invariably someone knows someone who knows someone.
Once you meet your doctors, you have to be happy that you are comfortable with them. That they understand you and respect your wishes. Be sure they take the time to explain the plan and answer your questions. Be sure you trust them. If you don’t, you will question every step.
Once you commit to your team, let them guide you through the process. It is hard to let go of control, but have faith that they have your back and focus on healing. Ask questions and do not be afraid to ask because you do not want to burden them. That’s why it’s a team – your doctor, a nurse, a therapist and others can communicate with you. And ideally it will be the same message any of them would relay. Getting mixed messages can also be overwhelming.
Bottom line: build a team with mutual respect and trust.
