Let’s Talk Menopause

As a Menopause Society-certified menopause practitioner (NCMP), a member of its Education Committee, and recently part of the team that updated their menopause slide deck, here’s what you need to know! Hormone therapy (HT) has been a topic of controversy for decades, particularly since the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) published initial data in 2002. Overnight, HT was effectively banished as a go-to for managing menopausal symptoms. Re-analysis of the data decades later has redeemed HT, but mistrust among patients and healthcare professionals alike continues to be a challenge. MENOPAUSE is NOT a disease. It is a natural progression in a woman’s reproductive life. It can be a wonderful, exciting, and fulfilling time. Managing your symptoms during this journey can help maximize your quality of life and help you enjoy this beautiful chapter of life.

1. HT (estrogen and progesterone) can be BENEFICIAL.

2. There are many formulations and modes of delivery.

3. HT is one-stop shopping if you can take it—hot flashes, vaginal dryness, and more.

4. If you have a history of breast cancer or other estrogen-dependent cancers, HT is not recommended. However, there are many no-hormone options available for you. BUT vaginal estrogen is an option for you!!!!

5. If you are at risk for breast cancer—such as carrying a gene mutation like BRCA—you CAN be treated with HT.

6. If you undergo risk-reducing surgery (removing the ovaries because of a BRCA mutation), you will become menopausal.

7. Early menopause is associated with other health risks, and HT can decrease those risks significantly.
